EVERYDAY MOMENTS: City Creek

^{There’s a great new mall in town. City Creek! It’s right across the street from Temple Square and is breathing new life into downtown. We finally made it for a visit last month, one week after it opened. It was also General Conference weekend so there were a lot of people. It was like Christmas! We loved it.}

We took a friend along for Little Miss. What we thought would be a couple of hours turned into a late in the night evening. There was so much to see and do.

There is a water show in the center fountain every hour. Of course, everyone gathers around to watch.

On the sky bridge crossing over Main Street.

The mall stretches across several blocks. We crossed the bridge to get to Macy’s and the food court. We thought about having a nice sit down dinner but the kids preferred exploring so we grabbed something quick.

This marker is situated on the north wall of the sky bridge over Main Street, between the two sections of the City Creek Center. The marker reads:

On July 28, 1847, Brigham Young walked between two branches of City Creek, waved his hands across the landscape and announced publicly that a temple would be built on that site. With that act, he established the heart of the city and the spot from which Salt Lake City would be organized.
The survey began at the southeast corner of Temple Square. Wide streets and ten-acre blocks radiate out from that point according to the cardinal points of the compass, with four blocks reserved for public gatherings. The design followed Joseph Smith's plat of the City of Zion--the physical setting for a community striving to practice religious ideals.
While the imprint of Salt Lake City's origins still evident, the home and garden lots in the heart of the city were soon replaced by a thriving business district.

I remember visiting Crossroads Plaza on the very site of City Creek Center when I lived in Utah years ago. ZCMI was THE place to shop. My grandma always went to General Conference two times a year and she’d always come home with several dresses purchased from ZCMI. We thought they were just beautiful!

And now on to something fun just for me and one of the reasons we went to City Creek on this date!

I went to Stephanie Nielson’s book signing at Deseret Book. If you don’t know her you can visit her blog: nieniedialogues Basically, Stephanie and her husband were in a plane crash and she was burned over 80% of her body. Her new book is Heaven Is Here where she writes her life story. It is a great read. So inspirational.

A miracle for sure, she delivered a brand new baby girl just days after this book signing. Something she wasn’t sure she’d be able to do after the accident. We are so happy for her.

Something else that was so fun, especially for the kids. Our family listens to the music of Mindy Gledhill. We have all her songs memorized. At the same time of the book signing, the kids were in the back of the store listening to Mindy sing and then getting their arms signed. We didn’t buy any CD’s for her to sign, we told her we already had them all.
