Written by Big MisterOn Wednesday, January 21, 2009, I was privileged to be in attendance at the inauguration ceremony of Jan Brewer, Arizona’s twenty-second Governor.
As I write this, I am contemplating the Gubernatorial succession, Arizona style. You have to go all the way back to 1975, Governor Jack Williams, to find a Governor that was both elected to his initial term and served to the end of his elected term.
Some fun this Arizona politics.
Governor Brewer spoke about 20 minutes in her Address. She spoke a lot about freedom, about individual freedoms, and about the hard fiscal choices that now must be made.
The ceremony itself was short and simple, but I thought how appropriate it really was. Our great nation, founded on the purest of ideals, has an outline for the succession of power that must be the envy of the world. There is no bloodshed, no rioting or need for battalions of heavily armed police and security forces, except to help regulate the traffic caused by the multitudes who gather peacefully to be witness to the miraculous event.
This is mirrored to scale at the State level. Our new Governor spoke well. Governor Brewer, like all government officials, will know that power is not intrinsic to them, nor an entitlement, but a great responsibility that is held in trust, for a short time only, the exercise of which must never be taken lightly, or used frivolously, or for personal gain and enrichment.
The crowd was enthusiastic, the day was bright and sunny, the flags were flying, and the proper decorum and sanctity of the moment was maintained, all in all, a very satisfying event. God bless Governor Brewer, and God bless Arizona.
