Meet our new friends from Penang, Malaysia. They had never before experienced an American Halloween. They loved every minute of it.
My brother-in-law works for Intel. He travels to Malaysia occasionally and these two men have been his “tour guides” when he is there. They give him the “what to do’s, where to go, what to see”, etc. These two Intel workers from Malaysia are now in Arizona working for a couple of months. So, my brother-in-law wanted to reciprocate their kindness.
He invited them to our family Halloween dinner and trick-or-treating. They were so excited and went out and bought their son a costume to wear for the occasion. Doesn’t he look good!
This gentlemen is our other new friend. His wife and three children stayed in Malaysia.
For dinner we had four different kinds of soups that included chili, chicken noodle, potato and corn chowder served in pumpkin bread bowls. Yummy!
After dinner we sat outside and visited while we enjoyed all of the kids in their costumes. Our new Malaysian friends were very excited to hand out candy. Their son went along with Big Mister, our kids and some cousins to trick or treat in our neighborhood. Their son had the experience of a lifetime!
As we visited we learned that the 12 year old boy is on break from school so it was the perfect time for them to come along to the United States for this assignment. In Malaysia, of course, their biggest and most important Holiday is the Chinese New year which comes sometime in January or February. The start of the new year changes every year since it is dictated by the lunar calendar. To celebrate, they have big family gatherings, gift giving and eating of symbolic food. The Holiday is celebrated for a couple of weeks. Sounds a lot like our Christmas and New Year Holiday.
Some family members left after dinner to hand out treats at their own houses. This is most of the group that stuck around for the fun at our house. My mom and a couple of my sisters along with their kids and our new friends.
It was a great day.
