Little Miss and her scary day

It was July 24th and Little Miss woke up with a very swollen eye.

She was worried and really scared.  We told her it was most likely an allergic reaction and gave her some Benadryl.  Throughout the day I noticed the swollen area was spreading and becoming a deeper red color.

We had a houseful of family for a 24th of July Barbeque in the evening, however, we decided that Big Mister should go ahead and take Little Miss to urgent care.  After an hour or so Little Miss called and said, “I told you so mom, it’s just an allergic reaction”.  Doctors instructions were to take Benadryl every 6 hours. 

Over the next couple of days we expected the swelling to go away, or at least show signs of improvement.   But, it just got worse and the redness began spreading under her eye.

What really worried us was the big lump, a hard knot, that was obviously under the eye brow. We could feel a big ball of stuff and it didn’t feel right!  Being so close to the eye we were concerned. 

Friday morning we got right into her regular doctor.  Within minutes he had her in their little surgical room.   She had a very large abscess and it needed to be drained and sent off to be tested. 

Not only did she need to have her eye lanced, she was also given a painful shot of antibiotics in each one of her thighs. She could barely walk for two days because her legs were so stiff.   The doctor was fairly certain she had MRSA, or a staph infection and felt like we needed the strong antibiotics in her system right now!  He also put her on two oral antibiotics.  He said one more day and he would have put her in Primary Children’s Hospital on IV antibiotics to fight the staph infection.  

By Monday we found out that it was definitely a staph infection. 

A funny thing that happened when Little Miss was getting her shots.  The doctor said they always put them right into the behind.  He took one look at her behind and said, “well in your case, we’ll have to use your thighs”.  Apparently, her buttocks is not fatty enough!

Where did this crazy infection come from?  For a couple of weeks before this all happened, Little Miss had a tiny pimple like bump on her eyebrow.  She’d pick at it, probably not a good thing to do.  The doctor thinks it could have been an ingrown eyebrow.  Who knows??

We are just very happy that she is better.  The knot in her eyebrow is tiny now and we hope it is completely gone within the week.
